Hearing
Recently, I got fitted for custom ear plugs. It’s likely long overdue, but not too late. It was a pretty easy process where my ear canals got filled with foam, which then was set to harden, then removed, boxed up, and shipped to a plant that would make plugs from these molds. By doing this, I now have plugs that fit exactly to my ear canal.
Previously, I had been using store bought foam plugs that basically just sealed off the entry to my ear canal, making it difficult to hear anything, yet still letting in some harmful frequencies. With the custom fitted plugs, not only can I actually hear more of what’s going on around me, but they actually reduce harmful frequencies, so hopefully my hearing will remain intact for some time.
The physicality of sound is profound, and I enjoy high volume experiences, but detail is important too, and sometimes detail is picked up by the ears in ways we can’t experience otherwise.
