Touching sound

Evelyn Glennie was sort of an inspiration for me starting this site. After listening to her work for years, seeing her film, reading her book, and referring to her in a presentation, I became convinced further that sound effects people on many different levels. Songs can entertain, and other sounds can remind us that it’s time to eat, go outside, get out of the way, etc. But they can also have an effect on us physically, and that’s the world that Glennie explores. Listen to an interview with her here with Wisconsin Public Radio.
I’ll likely post about her and her work in the future, but I felt like an initial post on her would sort of set the pace for the site. Enjoy!

Jon,
I really enjoyed your presentation/slide show on listening. I am not sure I have ever thought about silence as an impossibility…
but no matter what environment or situation I think of, I can’t think of any that where sound does not occur.
My Dad was an engineer and involved with the creation of the “Decibel” (created by Bell Labs) and used to tell me of their *absolutely* quiet Anechoic chamber. He said that even in there, you could hear your blood pumping through your body very clearly.

P.S. I’m a big fan of EG too. I have watched her film many times and got to see her here in Atlanta with the ASO. She was amazing.

Thanks, Jonathan. What you say is true – even in “silence,” the sound of our heart and breathing is audible.
Hope I get the chance to see EG live sometime, too.
Thanks again,
Jon
