The stories of sound

May 14th, 2009 by admin

Regardless of people’s intent with their recorded or performed work, there are stories that surround this activity.  It might be about the situation of the recording or performance; the people, place, material, the way they felt, or anything else specific to that time.  It might be about how they came to play what they played; what inspired them, or even how they began to work with sound or music.

In some ways, this insight might be for fans only.  Or, it might also be seen as documentation for future research to identify patterns among people doing certain types of work and how they analyze and create things.  The stories might inspire people in other lines of work to think differently about what they do. Essentially, they’re good stories to read for many reasons.

I’ve read a few books that contain these stories, and there are many others that take these stories even further, into more analytical and academic territory, for those so inclined.  Offset your music with a little reading, and discover another fine example of listening being more than hearing.
