Sufficiency
Adding further to the previous post about the cost of creativity, I’ve had conversations with people about simply making a living at what you do. In the corporate world, this is an easy equation – you get a job, perform its requirements well, and there you have it. In the independent world, in a world where it’s just as much about your ideas as it is your actions, it’s a bit more challenging.
I came upon this post by Chris Guillebeau about sufficiency. Chris travels the world nearly constantly and basically talks to people how he survives by doing that. He’s never had a “real job.” There are certainly parallels with this situation to a touring musician or any artist, and it’s clear that the equation is one that becomes more clear when one explores the ways that they can bring other people value, how they can share experience and knowledge with them, and how they can make it worth people’s time (and money) to pay attention.
