The cost of creativity

June 10th, 2009 by admin

There has always existed a hard balance between creativity and commerce.  Once the two fall out of balance, emotions flare toward either side: the creativity is not respected enough, or the creativity is not worthy of what was received.

Today, if you become a very good cook, you’ll likely make a living.  If you become a very good dancer, chances are less.  Both are creative jobs, but the perception of value is much different.  There’s a long (but interesting) paper published recently by Harvard that discusses this reality.  If anything, these kinds of discussions might start to change people’s opinions about where and how value is placed on creativity, specifically in the U.S.
