Lost

October 25th, 2009 by admin

Last week in NYC, I had one night to meet with friends, so I contacted Adam Wills to see if he was free. What followed was a vague yet positive string of text messages, and I headed to the subway in Manhattan and tried to get to Brooklyn. I had no idea where he was exactly, nor would he tell me, but said he’d be around. “Around Brooklyn” is a pretty vast description, but I figured it would work out.

Navigating the subway from midtown to Brooklyn proved more challenging than expected. After wrong trains, walking to different stations, and then landing in an area that I assumed to be correct, I began walking even further, trying to find some semblance of an area where Adam might be, though I wasn’t even sure what that was.

After 30 minutes of walking, I suspected I was heading into an area that was potentially unsafe, so I turned around and began walking the other direction, still completely aimless. All this time, no further messages from Adam arrived, and I started to have doubts about making the venture. Eventually, after another 30 minutes or so, I was tired and hungry, and began looking for restaurants or bars where I could stop and reevaluate what to do next. I passed many places, but either they were too crowded or looked like too much of an investment for my purposes, so I kept walking, eventually walking past an English pub looking place. I decided I could get a quick beer here, and figure out what to do. After sitting for a bit, I texted Adam one last time, with the words, “At English pub looking place. Lost.” At this point, I didn’t expect to be meeting him, and even wondered how I would find my way back to Manhattan.

Within minutes, I turned to find Adam walking towards me from the back of the bar, and when he got near me, he simply said, “c’mon back.”

I still have not stopped analyzing all the details of this story, and how it is even remotely possible for it to have happened. The only thing I feel completely certain about is that it’s a great story to tell.

what an adventure! was there a secret passage at the end with beer overflowing into bathtubs and smart conversation abounding?

did you ever ask Adam how he knew you’d find him?

No. There was one beer and talk of Bradbury and moustaches.

No explanation, as there certainly couldn’t be one.
