A Pleasant Surprise
Word was that Wittmer + Knowles (Gerritt Wittmer and Paul Knowles) live performance had already caused two people to pass out on their current tour. Stories of past tours told of seizures and other mishaps that, if I were 20, would have been hands down the drawing card for me. Not so anymore, so as they took the stage on Saturday night in Milwaukee, I was prepared to leave, not observe. But, I’m not old enough to not give something a chance first.
Good thing I did. What occurred is difficult to put into words, but it dealt as much with silence and light as it did with sound, which was also not very oppressive itself. Sounds simple enough, but that’s where words become difficult. Long periods of staring took place. Non-blinking, eye-to-eye staring, from across the room, then close up, face-to-face. Then a tear slowly ran down a cheek. The tension could have been sawed in half. Then flashing lights consumed everyone’s vision, while a book lay on a small table off to the side of the stage, seemingly arbitrary, but of course not.
No fainting or seizures occurred, but in fact two stomach aches not only ceased, they actually felt “better” than normal. And that is about all I can say. Expect a forthcoming interview with this duo here to hopefully scratch the surface a bit further.

Yeah, I was thinking someone might pass out or maybe a seizure would occurr during their performance as well. It sure says a lot that they’re still doing this despite those instances, and didn’t say anything about the intensity of the lights prior to the performance. Not that it bothers me; I thought it was fantastically oppressive. Thoroughouly engaging. Agreed, their use of silence and tension was well placed. Not a sound was made by the audience during the aftermath portions of their act. Short and to the point. Very well done.
The rest of the Chicago show went well too. Gripping performances all around.
Looking forward to that interview.
